Welcome to the world of "Out of Our Minds". As teachers of WIM classes as well as editors of this collection of works, we knew how well the writers of Writers in The Mountains were writing. Even so, we were surprised by the variety of style and content our students submitted, and the serendipitous way pieces worked together. The decision to put together a book and the process of requesting funds to do so are leaps of faith, we had to believe that our writers would come through for us. They did. There were many submissions, and we had to turn down some good pieces that just did not work in this book.

Writers in the Mountains is based on the idea that anyone can write and that the best place to start writing is from your own life. The strongest writing in some classes does indeed come from the writer's life experiences. As some writers gain skills, they begin the process of using more and more imagination in the writing, but where the line is crossed between what is real and what is imagined is fuzzy. One way a writer develops is by recognizing the potential for stories in real life experiences or witnessed events. These events can then trigger the creation of an imaginary world.

While we think of ourselves as a family, we are not at all exclusive. Writers in the Mountains continually welcomes new writers to our classes. There is nearly always a class in progress. We have a small stable of teachers, experienced in writing or teaching, or both. Classes/workshops - we never know what to call them - range from enhancing the creative process to journaling to the crafting of specific genres.
